AN EVENING IN BETHLEHEM

Calvary Baptist Church in Wetaskiwin (4910 Northmount Drive) invites you to enjoy the real meaning of Christmas, by experiencing an outdoor and indoor guided tour through Bethlehem – Live Animals; Live Actors; Refreshments!  December 5, 6 and 7.  The door’s open from 6:30pm to 8:30pm.  The cost is a non-perishable donation to the Wetaskiwin Food Bank.

This December 10th, the John Humphrey Centre is proud to be hosting once again the

Third Annual Gall Conference with this year's theme on Putting Children First. This conference is intended for anyone with an interest in improving the well-being and ensuring the fulfillment of children's rights in our community. Amnesty International does excellent work in seeking justice in our world by advancing the cause of Human Rights.  One Sunday, December 7^th, there will be information at the church concerning a number of human rights concerns that A.I. is inviting people to support.  You are welcome to participate in this letter-writing campaign after church.

The 8^th Annual Human Rights City Edmonton Awards will be handed out on December 10^th in a ceremony beginning at 7pm in the ATB Financial Arts Barns (10330 84 Avenue).  Come celebrate local heroes.  Admission is by donation.

RISING UP FOR HOPE AND HEALING

For the 31^st year, an auction will raise money for one of Leduc’s most successful Christmas outreach programs.  Santa’s Helpers provide food hampers and gifts to a growing number of underprivileged families in Leduc.  Come to the Leduc Rec Centre on December 6^th at 11:00am.

St. Andrew’s College invites everyone to their annual Winter Refresher, March 5^th – 7^th.  The theme this year is “The Holy Spirit and the Environmental Crisis”, with Keynote speaker, Mark Wallace: a professor of Religion and Interpretation Theory Coordinator at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. RECONCILIATION BETWEEN ABORIGINAL PEOPLE OF CANADA AND
OTHER CANADIANS

Come to a panel discussion tomorrow (November 21^st) at 8pm at the Citadel Shoctor Theatre in Edmonton moderated by Marie Wilson (a commissioner with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission) Discuss how bridges can be built between indigenous communities and the rest of Canada to truly make reconciliation a reality.  Free admission.

ETHICAL WILL

Come on November 23^rd to St. Stephen’s College (8810-112 Street; Edmonton, Alberta) for a Legacy Letter workshop where you will be helped to draft a letter to your child/grandchildren that they can treasure. This will help you to tell them the values/principles that have guided your life.  You will explore 12 questions that will help you put into words what is in your history and heart as a legacy for your loved ones to remember you by (sometimes called an ‘ethical will”).  This workshop is free of charge (donations are graciously accepted).  Please register via email to: charles.bidwell@ualberta.ca

REMEMBERING THE CHILDREN SOCIETY

The society’s Annual General Meeting will be on November 25^th at 7pm at Sacred Heart Church of the First Peoples 10821 -96 St., Edmonton.  There will two speakers: Archaeologist Terry Gibson, and transitional justice researcher Dr. Augustine Park.

MISSING AND MURDERED ABORIGINAL WOMEN

Between 1982 and 2012, a total of 1181 Indigenous women and girls have been murdered or are missing in Canada. As a result, the #MMIW movement has reignited calls for the Canadian government to conduct an inquiry. The question remains, however, will an inquiry get at the root causes of the issue?  Join together on November 24^th at 6pm at MacEwan University (room CCC 6-156) and learn from local researchers and practitioners in Edmonton about the systemic barriers and root causes that have led to this situation. What can be done to address these barriers and what can we – as a collective – do to raise awareness on the issue?
